To ensure we uphold these standards, we work exclusively with BUTTERO leather, one of the finest full-grain natural leathers available. Known for its rich texture and exceptional quality, BUTTERO leather allows us to craft products that not only look beautiful but also stand the test of time. Conceria Walpier, the Italian manufacturer of the BUTTERO leather, is a part of the Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium (Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale). The Consortium regulates, preserves, and guarantees the production of vegetable-tanned leather made in Tuscany through its quality trade mark:

OUR QUALITY, DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY FUNDAMENTALS

In our work we combine old-school craftsmanship with modern and functional design. Durability and long-lasting are the key features. To provide consistent and continuous premium quality of our products, we ground on the following technology fundamentals:

  • We use only the highest grade of natural full-grain vegetable-tanned leather.
  • We do hand leather skiving for all visible parts. Skiving machines offer comfort and productivity, but they tend to apply too much pressure, which causes permanent deformation in vegetable-tanned leather.
  • We glue and stitch leather parts by hand. That’s essential for the shape and for the final look of most products. Similar to the leather skiving machines, the leather sewing machines also tend to apply too much pressure and deform the vegetable-tanned leather. Furthermore, we greatly value the strength and elegance of traditional handmade saddle stitching over machine-made lock stitching. Exceptionally, we sew some parts of bags by using heavy-duty sewing machines. Usually, this is when the seam is hidden inside the bag, or for the leather straps that are too long to be effectively hand-stitched.
  • We do not paint or dye leather edges. Instead we bevel and burnish them to perfection by hand for a natural look, consistent with the leather color.
  • We exclusively use premium leather hardware sourced from trusted brands.


SUSTAINABILITY AND ECOLOGY RESPONSIBILITIES

Natural leather is much closer to sustainable craftsmanship and lifestyle than most people assume. The leather we work with is not specifically harvested for crafts and leather goods. It is a residual product from the food industry. In fact, leathercraft is a form of upcycling – we give meaning and new life to something that would otherwise go to waste. At the same time, artificial "eco leather" is often anything but eco. Most often it is made of petroleum-based plastics such as PU or PVC that are difficult to degrade, almost not recyclable and release microplastics into the environment.

Quality natural leather, on the other hand, not only has a smaller footprint on nature, but it ages beautifully. The more it is used, the more character and patina it acquires. It is used for years, even decades - and this means less consumption and less waste in the long run.

At UN ANGELO® we work with vegetable tanned leather – treated with natural tannins and without harsh chemicals. This process is more sustainable. Moreover, the result is a healthy, aesthetic leather with depth and a natural look. We do our best to minimize waste at every stage of production.
