Moon to look bigger next weekend during 'lunar perigee' – Telegraph

A ver la luna gigante el 19 Marzo!![]()
The moon will appear bigger next weekend as it makes its closest approach to
earth for 19 years during an event known as a “lunar perigee”.
On March 19 the moon will reach a distance of just 221,567 miles from Earth –
the nearest it will have come since 1992.
Previous “supermoons” occured around the time natural disasters –
including the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami and Cyclone Tracy which devastated the
Australian city of Darwin in 1974 – but scientists say there is no evidence
to suggest the phenomenon is a sign of impending doom.
Pete Wheeler, of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy, told the
website news.com.au:
“There will be no earthquakes or volcanoes erupting, unless they are to
happen anyway.
An Update on Android Market Security
On Tuesday evening, the Android team was made aware of a number of malicious applications published to Android Market. Within minutes of becoming aware, we identified and removed the malicious applications. The applications took advantage of known vulnerabilities which don’t affect Android versions 2.2.2 or higher. For affected devices, we believe that the only information the attacker(s) were able to gather was device-specific (IMEI/IMSI, unique codes which are used to identify mobile devices, and the version of Android running on your device). But given the nature of the exploits, the attacker(s) could access other data, which is why we’ve taken a number of steps to protect those who downloaded a malicious application:
- We removed the malicious applications from Android Market, suspended the associated developer accounts, and contacted law enforcement about the attack.
- We are remotely removing the malicious applications from affected devices. This remote application removal feature is one of many security controls the Android team can use to help protect users from malicious applications.
- We are pushing an Android Market security update to all affected devices that undoes the exploits to prevent the attacker(s) from accessing any more information from affected devices. If your device has been affected, you will receive an email from android-market-support@google.com over the next 72 hours. You will also receive a notification on your device that “Android Market Security Tool March 2011” has been installed. You may also receive notification(s) on your device that an application has been removed. You are not required to take any action from there; the update will automatically undo the exploit. Within 24 hours of the exploit being undone, you will receive a second email.
- We are adding a number of measures to help prevent additional malicious applications using similar exploits from being distributed through Android Market and are working with our partners to provide the fix for the underlying security issues.
For more details, please visit the Android Market Help Center. We always encourage you to check the list of permissions when installing an application from Android Market. Security is a priority for the Android team, and we’re committed to building new safeguards to help prevent these kinds of attacks from happening in the future.

‘Firearm’ jet ban … for 3in model rifle | The Sun |News

En el aeropuerto de Londres no se le permite llevar armas a las soldaditos de plomo!

Security officials took one look at the SA80 rifle held by the figurine and ruled it was a firearm.
Ken had to remove it and hand it over. It was later posted to him at his home in Ontario.
He said: “As the figurine was pulled from the box, the security search officer contacted her supervisor. The SA80 rifle ‘could not pass’. My wife Julie asked the staff to take a reality check. It’s a 9in painted model with a rifle that is part of the figure.
“The supervisor was confident that, according to the regulations, a firearm is a firearm and cannot pass. The rifle could not travel.

The GDP per capita in Italy is $30,300 while in Spain it is $33,700
This entry shows GDP on a purchasing power parity basis divided by population as of 1 July for the same year. A nation’s GDP at purchasing power parity (PPP) exchange rates is the sum value of all goods and services produced in the country valued at prices prevailing in the United States. This is the measure most economists prefer when looking at per-capita welfare and when comparing living conditions or use of resources across countries. The measure is difficult to compute, as a US dollar value has to be assigned to all goods and services in the country regardless of whether these goods and services have a direct equivalent in the United States (for example, the value of an ox-cart or non-US military equipment); as a result, PPP estimates for some countries are based on a small and sometimes different set of goods and services. In addition, many countries do not formally participate in the World Bank’s PPP project that calculates these measures, so the resulting GDP estimates for these countries may lack precision. For many developing countries, PPP-based GDP measures are multiples of the official exchange rate (OER) measure. The differences between the OER- and PPP-denominated GDP values for most of the wealthy industrialized countries are generally much smaller.

Paul Allen is a Douchebag
Seriously? This just underlines how badly the US patent system is broken.
How did a Microsoft cofounder get a patent on “Browser use for navigating through information?” I suppose he thinks IE was the first browser too.
“Managing a users peripheral attention” is patentable? I guess notes in the margin of textbooks all get to pay royalties to him too… Or the little TV station watermarks in the corners of TV broadcasts, or even the blinky light on cell phones that tell you that you missed a call.
The patent system was created to protect intellectual property, not stifle innovation or try to reap profits from an idea that is either obvious or has existed in other works for decades or even centuries.
Hell, maybe I should get a patent on “Character combination displayed on a medium in order to symbolize language and express information” and see if I can get royalties every time anyone writes anything down!
Paul Allen (and every other patent troll) is a total and utter shitbag.
WebGL now in Beta: here comes the 3D web!
We’re happy to announce that WebGL is now on by default in Google Chrome’s beta channel, with some shiny new demos to show off what the technology can do.
WebGL is a 3D graphics API for JavaScript that developers can use to create fully 3D web apps. It is based on the OpenGL ES 2.0 API, which should be familiar to many 3D graphics developers. Google, Mozilla, Apple, Opera and graphics hardware vendors have been working together to standardize WebGL for over a year now, and since the spec is just about final at this point, we wanted to get our implementation out there for feedback.
While you may not find much WebGL content on the web, we expect developers to quickly create a lot of content given the power and familiarity of the API. To inspire developers and give users a taste of the kind of apps they can expect in the near future, we’ve worked with a few talented teams to build a few more 3D web apps:
Body Browser, a human anatomy explorer built by a team at Google as a 20% project
Nine Point Five, a 3D earthquake map by Dean McNamee
Music Visualizer, a jukebox that synchronizes 3D graphics to the beat of the music by Jacob Seidelin
You can find these and other demos in the new Chrome Experiments Gallery for WebGL demos. Now that WebGL is enabled in the beta channel, the Chrome Experiments team is looking for your cool WebGL app submissions to show off this slick technology, so don’t forget to submit your cool 3D apps!
