Facebook has introduced a handful of mobile tools, including single sign-on for third-party apps, new location write APIs, and a “Deals” platform, which allows local businesses to send coupons and other offers to people who are nearby.

The company is not building a phone. “There’s this rumor out there that we’re building a phone,” Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said today during an event at company headquarters in Palo Alto. “Uh, no.”

With single sign-on, if a user is already signed into Facebook, he can log-in into third-party apps with a single click. Erick Tseng, vp for Facebook Mobile, said the company is releasing a new mobile SDK that allows developers to take advantage of single sign-on

BBC News – Google sues US in software battle

Ahora le toca a Google en ir en contra del gobierno!

Google is suing the US government, saying it was unfairly excluded from a $58m deal to revamp e-mail systems at the Department of the Interior.

In a lawsuit filed with the US Court of Federal Claims, Google says the terms of the five-year contract rule out its products and favour rival Microsoft.

The search giant wants to offer its Google Apps software for the contract.

But Google says it was told that only Microsoft’s business software could be used – a move it called “arbitrary”.

The Department of the Interior, which employs about 88,000 people, declined to comment on Google’s legal action.

ideas para regalos para estas navidades:

This incredible iPhone 4 was yesterday unveiled as the world’s most expensive mobile – worth a jaw-dropping £5 MILLION.

The handset is wrapped in more than 500 individual flawless cut diamonds totalling 100 carats.

It features two interchangeable diamonds which fit over the ‘home’ button – a single cut 7.4 carat pink diamond and a rare 8 carat single cut flawless diamond which are together worth more than £4 million.

The back of the phone is plated in rose gold and the Apple logo glitters with 53 diamonds.

British designer Stuart Hughes, 38, of Liverpool, was commissioned to make two of the bespoke handset by a mega-rich Australian businessman.

He said: ‘It was a fantastic challenge and I am really pleased with the end result – the phones look superb.

‘Phones are so popular at the moment and this is the ultimate design for one. It was a very exciting project.

‘The diamonds are rare and difficult to source, stones like that usually have a very long history.

‘It is amazing that someone is prepared to spend £5 million on a phone, I doubt it will get used because it is worth so much money.

'It would be a disaster if it was ever lost.'

The phones come with their own protection box – made from a single 7kg block of Granite in imperial pink with the inned lined with Nubuck top grain leather.

Father-of-two Stuart gold-plated his first mobile phone, a Nokia 8800, in 2003 and has since been making elaborate bespoke designs for customers in London, Marbella and Monaco.

His cheaper iPhone models – which retail between £1,800 and £22,000 – have been snapped up by showbiz royalty including Stefano Gabbana, of Dolce and Gabbana.

Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld is also a regular customer of Stuart’s work.

Iberia a comprar British Airways? Perdón fusión… :P

The Spaniards made their decision following a board meeting in Madrid, and it was immediately welcomed by BA, which has been plagued by industrial unrest after the airline announced moves to cut jobs and reform working practices.

“Our merger plan is now very much on target,” said a BA spokesman.

Regulators in Europe have already signed off the deal, which should be completed by the end of the year. Shareholder approval is expected in November.

Once finalised, BA investors will control 56% of the combined company, to be called International Airlines Group (IAG). Iberia shareholders will hold 44%.

UK set for double-dip recession, warns BDO – Telegraph

ops

These levels have not been seen since the deepest parts of the recession,
between November 2008 and July 2009. It is also the first time the index has
dropped below the crucial 95 mark since July 2009, suggesting that the
economy may contract at the end of this year.

The company’s output Index, which tracks UK businesses’ turnover expectations,
also shows a marked drop from 99.8 in July to 97.8. This data points to
sluggish economic growth in the second half of the year.

The lack of confidence may coincide with government communications around
forthcoming fiscal tightening, combined with the looming Comprehensive
Spending Review that will set out the government’s spending plans from 2011
to 2015.

Call phones from Gmail

cuanto tardará pa tenerlo aqui? Lo necesito!!!

(Cross-posted from the Gmail Blog)

Gmail voice and video chat makes it easy to stay in touch with friends and family using your computer’s microphone and speakers. But until now, this required both people to be at their computers, signed into Gmail at the same time. Given that most of us don’t spend all day in front of our computers, we thought, “wouldn’t it be nice if you could call people directly on their phones?”

Starting today, you can call any phone right from Gmail.

Calls to the U.S. and Canada will be free for at least the rest of the year and calls to other countries will be billed at our very low rates. We worked hard to make these rates really cheap (see comparison table) with calls to the U.K., France, Germany, China, Japan—and many more countries—for as little as $0.02 per minute.

Dialing a phone number works just like a normal phone. Just click “Call phone” at the top of your chat list and dial a number or enter a contact’s name.

We’ve been testing this feature internally and have found it to be useful in a lot of situations, ranging from making a quick call to a restaurant, to placing a call when you’re in an area with bad reception.

If you have a Google Voice phone number, calls made from Gmail will display this number as the outbound caller ID. And if you decide to, you can receive calls made to this number right inside Gmail (see instructions).

We’re rolling out this feature to U.S. based Gmail users over the next few days, so you’ll be ready to get started once “Call Phones” shows up in your chat list (you will need to install the voice and video plug-in if you haven’t already). If you’re not a U.S. based user—or if you’re using Google Apps for your school or business—then you won’t see it quite yet. We’re working on making this available more broadly—so stay tuned!

Just speak it: introducing Voice Actions for Android

NECESITO 2.2!

(cross-posted from the Google Mobile Blog)
Our mobile phones have become modern-day Swiss Army knives. An Android phone is a handheld computer, a music player, a notepad, a GPS navigation unit and more, all rolled into one sleek device that fits in your pocket. Today’s phones do so many things for us that sometimes we don’t even think about how we do them.
Even though our phones do all these new things, the most natural way of interacting with a phone remains what it always has been: speaking. And to that end, we’re pleased to introduce Voice Actions for Android. Voice Actions are a series of spoken commands that let you control your phone using your voice. Call businesses and contacts, send texts and email, listen to music, browse the web, and complete common tasks, all just by speaking into your phone.

To use Voice Actions, tap the microphone button on the Google search box on your home screen, or press down for a few seconds on the physical search button on your phone to activate the “Speak Now” screen. Let Mike LeBeau, the lead engineer for Voice Actions, show you in this video.

Speak any of these commands to perform a Voice Action on your phone:
  • send text to [contact] [message]
  • listen to [artist/song/album]
  • call [business]
  • call [contact]
  • send email to [contact] [message]
  • go to [website]
  • note to self [note]
  • navigate to [location/business name]
  • directions to [location/business name]
  • map of [location]
And of course, you can still conduct a Google search using your voice.
While we’re at it, we’re also releasing an updated version of the Google search widget for Android. When you type a local search query, like [italian restaurants] you’ll see suggested restaurants with addresses and ratings. Also, as you type queries, you can refine them further by tapping the pencil icon that appears to the right of search suggestions.
Both Voice Actions and the new Google search widget require Android 2.2 (Froyo), and will be pre-installed with the new Droid 2 phone from Motorola and Verizon. Voice Actions are currently available for U.S. English speakers.
If you have another phone with Android 2.2 (like the Nexus One, HTC Evo or the original Droid), you’ll need to download several app updates from Android Market to get all the latest goodness:
  • Voice Search (this app includes Voice Actions)
  • Google Search widget
  • music apps (e.g. Pandora, Last.fm, Rdio, mSpot)
To get started fast, scan the QR codes for these apps below.
We think Voice Actions help you get things done on your phone faster and easier. Give it a try, and let us know what you think!

The BA and the PM | Marcos Ferrer

The BA and the PM

(With thanks to Lewis Carroll’s “The Walrus and the Carpenter”).

The vision shined upon the project,
Shone with all its might:
It did its very best to make
The plan seem smooth and bright–
And this was odd, since projects grow
From hidden dark of night.

The BA waited sulkily,
Because she thought vision
Had no real meat to back it up
Yet budgets were all done–
“It’s very rude of it,” she said,
“To come and spoil the fun!”

The team was set as set could be,
The keystrokes start to fly.
You could not see a coder ’cause
They busied on UIs:
No time to architect things right
Only time to fly.

The BA and the PM
Were walking close at hand;
The BA wept o’er missed requirements
Such projects were in Stand-
-ish and Gartner and Chaos
Such projects would crash land!

“If seven JADs, each with models
Analyzed half a year.
Do you suppose,” the BA said,
“That they could get it clear?”
“I doubt it,” said the PM,
“The deadline is too near”

“Oh Stakeholders, come walk with us!”
The PM did beseech.
“A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk,
Along the UI veil:
We cannot do what vision wants,
With luck you cannot tell.”

“The time has come,” the BA said,
“To talk of many things:
Of business rules and process too
Of re-en-gi-neer-ing
And why root causes were left out
And whether screens DO things.”

“But wait a bit,” Stakeholders cried,
“Before we have our chat;
For most of us are scared of change,
Don’t make us talk of that!”
“No hurry!” said the PM.
He smelled a sly way out.

“A Use Case now,” the BA said,
Is what we chiefly need:
Its what it does, not how it looks
That gives our project speed
Now if you’re ready, Stakeholders,
We can work out the true needs.”

“But not from us!” Stakeholders cried,
Turning a little blue.
“Asking us to think so hard
About the things we do!”
“The project’s fine,” the PM said.
“Don’t let BA bug you.”

“It seems a shame,” the BA said,
“To play them such a trick,
The vision could be made to work
If we just work on it!”
The PM said nothing but
“You think the screens are slick?”

“I weep for you,” the BA said:
“I deeply sympathize.”
With sobs and tears she analyzed
Important gaps of largest size,
Wrote them down, turned them in
And then kissed them goodbye.

“Oh Stakeholders,” said the PM,
“You’ve had a pleasant run!
You told us what to build on screen
We kept you happy, weren’t it fun?”
“Couldn’t care less!”, as they confessed
The system pleased no one.

Microsoft Battles Apple in the Wrong Market
Microsoft has launched a new Windows 7 campaign to take on Mac OS X. A new tab on the Windows 7 sites compares Windows 7 to Mac OS X in a number of areas–listing out the reasons that Windows 7 is the superior choice. Most of the points made by Microsoft are valid, but the campaign itself is a waste of resources that could be better used battling Apple where it counts.

Google acquires Slide, positions itself to rule online gambling world

August 07, 2010 By: Steven Stradbrooke Category: google

Google-Acquires-SlideGoogle has confirmed its acquisiton of social networking application developers Slide, for a reported $228M. The move follows other investments Google has made in the social networking sector, with a particular focus on game developers, including Zynga and its 28M Texas Hold ‘Em players. This may have serious ramifications for the online gambling community, as Bodog Europe CEO Patrik Selin believes that if/when the United States does actually give online poker its legal blessing, Zynga might well be the best positioned company to capitalize on such a move.

The plot thickens, as Google may have just secured for itself the big fat double-wide traffic lane on the new two-tier interwebz, leaving the other online poker companies to limp down a digital gravel road… Geez, you half expect to wake up tomorrow and discover Google has trademarked the word ‘poker’.
